Animation Mentor Class 2 – Week 1

Heyho ladies!
Well, after one week off, i started into class 2! YYeahaaa, allright, class 2! As i heard, that could be the hardest class to manage. But i am looking forward to it! My mentor for this class is Dana Boadway, a very nice girl who likes to talk a lot i guess :) Anyway, our first q&a was round about 1 1/2 hours and everyone introduces themselves. I was really nervous this time, because a friend of mine and another german guy (who is living in a town right next to me! Yeah, small world he?). I tried to give my best, but, all i could say about myself have been only words… No real sentences with sense :D At least i think so.
Anyway, our task for this week was “just” shooting some reference for the assignment we had to choose. I picked a 180° jump. Further we had to do the planning of that shot. I picked the (in my opinion) keyframes out of the recorded videoreference and took some notes.
But look yourself:

Unfortunately i forgot to draw some sketches. Dana said it would be better to actually draw your key or “golden”poses, so that you really think through how they are going to work and that way it’s easier to push or exaggerate your poses!
So that’s it for this week, gonna create a new post for week 2!
Stay tuned guys and happy animating !
Cheers,
Poly.

Animation Mentor Class 1 – Week 12

Wuhuuuu!
My final week in class 1 ! Unbelievable that the first class is over already. I learned so much about the principals of animation, especially with overlapping action ! It’s amazing where we can see or observe overlapping action. It’s nearly all around us, just have a closer look at things how they move or how the person is moving you’re hangin’ out with ! It’s crazy!
So in our final week, week 12 by the way, we had to put together our progress reel for this class. I decided to render out my stuff with a little material tutorial – which can be found here:

Maya Quick Materials Tutorial:

(If you think that video is useful for you, please browse further to the videosite and say THANKS to the author!)

It was quite fun to put everything together. I mean, you can see how you improved, how your results got better and better. I didn’t think a lot about how to put it together so that it looks cool, i just added some text in front of the reel and then put one shot after another behind.
Anyway, hope you like it, have a look.

Animation Mentor Class 1 – Week 10/11

Hey guys!
Loooooooooong time no post. I am sorry for that, i forgot it somehow all the time. But now i am here and i try to sum up everything i learned/experienced the last 4 weeks of class 1 and, of course the first week of class 2.
So here we go for week 10. Actually we had to shoot videoreference, or at least we could shoot if we wanted to, for a personality walk. I decided to do something like a happy walk with legs thrown forward faster than normal, and with a little jump each step in it.
So here is what i had after blocking the walk from a sideview only:

personality walk, sideview:

And here’s the finished 3/4 perspective of my happy personality walk:

It was a bit strange to animate the walk in a perspective view. I don’t know why, but the “feeling” of the walk was lost somehow. If you look closely at the sideview you can “feel” or see those little jumps and the energy which comes with it.
And then in perspective, somehow it’s missing. Strange. Don’t know why that happens. Probably my keyposes are not strong enough, not exxagerated enough. Well, it’s too late now to think about it, but i hope that i can achieve better results in the future.
So stay tuned!

Cheers,
Poly.
